Lowline Angus Heifers

What are Lowline Cattle?

Lowline cattle are a a distinct miniature cattle breed derived from an old fashioned Aberdeen Angus cattle genetic base. These cattle have been developed into a new breed in Australia by the Trangie Research Center. This work, which started in 1929 involved selecting pure Aberdeen Angus cattle for, mild temperament, small calf size, early maturity, small cow and bull size, marbling on grass and ease of calving.

Are Lowlines a good choice for a homestead beef animal?

Lowlines are an excellent choice for the small homestead or back acre. These are easy care hardy animals, that respect fences, calve easily without assistance, are quiet and docile yet produce volumes of excellent beef on an all grass diet. If you buy your hay or even if you make your own, you will get by with a lot less than other beef breeds. And any heifer calves that you choose to sell will find a ready market at a respectable price. Without a doubt these are the premier backyard beef animal. Good for 4-H project too.

How about using them for a small herd with a few acres?

Lowlines are naturally polled, very gentle and easy to manage. This nature and the smaller size makes them a good cattle for the small acreage farmstead, for 4-H steers, pets or keeping the back acreage mowed. The smaller carcasses and smaller bones are ideal for a family freezer. Return to top.

What about the larger beef producer?

Lowline Cattle, in addition to producing more salable beef per acre and requiring less winter feed, provide other advantages to the larger beef producer. Lowline bulls are ideal for first calf heifers producing a small vigorous and beefy calf. Female offspring from a Lowline bull  provide valuable heifers which command a premium price as replacements. Grass-fed beef is a very fast growing market and also commands a premium price if its properly finished which can be a difficult thing to do on grass with some of the present cattle genetics. Lowlines finish and marble well on grass because the original Angus genetics have not been changed by selection for feedlot performance and/or by adding other breed blood to increase body size. Small efficient beef cattle are the wave of the future and the premium Angus breed in this smaller package will be the breed of choice for this market. Return to top.

Why do you have them ?

We have been raising standard beef cattle and registered Dexter cattle for some time and selling meat and breeding stock from the animals. Just recently we sold the last of our standard and Dexter cattles having  replaced them all with Fullblood Lowline animals. The meat producing qualities of Lowlines is really something special and we find them extreamly easy to manage. These rugged but gentle animals have almost all of the Dexter's desirable qualities and after getting to understand them find that they have many other other valuable qualities in addition. Fullblood Lowline bulls are ideal for breeding heifers and ending up with a good beef animal or valuable start on a registered Lowline herd. Return to top.
